The College of the Canyons track and field program sent a combined 14 student-athletes to compete in 13 events at the 2017 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship meet hosted by American River College May 19-20.
COC sophomores Jasmine Hall and Díani Ellis led the women’s team after both claiming CCCAA SoCal Championships at last week’s regional final meet.
Hall emerged as the Southern California Champion in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.75m and will next try to jump her way to a state title. She will also compete for a championship in the 100h, long jump and javelin, as well as the heptathlon.
Likewise, Ellis finished first in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:26.91, and will advance to the state finals.
Sophomore Jessica Ruiz had a busy weekend after qualifying to compete in the 1,500m (4:48.76), 5,000m (18:39.59) and 10,000m (39:24.61) events.
Also representing the women’s track & field program was Shalyn Mabritto (5,000m/18:31.83), Stephanie Martinez (10,000m/40:02.39), Samiyah Hawkins (shot put/11.59m) and Kaitlyn Matthews (high jump/1.65m).
Sophomore Zachary Larson represented COC in the decathlon.
Marcel Sylvester (1.95m) and Weston Lombardo (1.95m) will both compete in the high jump.
The men’s 4x400m relay team of Leo Lambert III, Blake Beeler, Keion Broadus and Tochukwe Eze also qualified for the state meet with a time of 4:12.65.
