LANCASTER, Calif. – Brendan Rodgers blasted two home runs and the JetHawks used a six-run sixth inning to pull away from the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino, 8-1, on Friday night at The Hangar.
The first long ball was a solo shot to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and put the JetHawks in front for good. The second was a two-run blast in the big sixth inning. Rodgers added a sensational diving catch at shortstop in the seventh inning. He is now batting .369 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 29 games.
Brian Mundell led off the sixth for Lancaster with his 10th home run of the season, tying him for the league lead. He also leads the California League with 40 RBI. Chris Rabago added a two-run double in the frame and Garrett Hampson delivered an RBI single.
Inland Empire opened the scoring in the second. With two out, Cody Ramer drew a walk against Lancaster starter Jesus Tinoco. Jake Yacinich followed with an RBI double.
The JetHawks tied it in the fourth inning. Mundell led off with a double and Roberto Ramos immediately followed with an RBI single.
Tinoco (3-0) captured the win with five solid innings of work, but departed after throwing 90 pitches. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits. He walked four and struck out two. Heath Holder, Sam Thoele, and Salvador Justo combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the JetHawks bullpen to close the game.
Hampson, Brendan Rodgers, and Wes Rogers had two hits apiece for Lancaster. The JetHawks stole six bases in the contest, led by three from Wes Rogers. He now has swiped 26 this season to lead the league.
The three-game series continues on Saturday night at The Hangar. Right-hander Craig Schlitter (6-1) will start for Lancaster against right-hander Jesus Castillo (1-0). First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
