Brendan Rodgers finished the month of May with a home run and multi-hit game, but the Lancaster JetHawks dropped the month’s finale, 3-2, to the Stockton Ports on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Rodgers went 2-for-4 with a solo blast, his eighth home run of the season. The California League Player of the Week extended his current hitting streak to 10 games and has now homered five times in his last eight games.
The home run came against right-hander Jesse Hahn, a starter for Oakland who was pitching for Stockton (27-26) on a rehab assignment. The JetHawks (29-24) scored against Hahn in the first inning when Brian Mundell singled to score Yonathan Daza with two outs. Mundell picked up his league-leading 48th RBI on the play.
Peter Lambert (3-5) cruised through the first five innings, out-pitching his big league counterpart. Rodgers hit his home run in the sixth inning against Hahn to give Lambert a 2-0 lead heading into the sixth.
Lambert had allowed just two hits and struck out six through his first five innings. Eli White led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on a one-out James Harris hit. Seth Brown promptly singled on the first pitch of his at-bat to put the Ports on the board. Sean Murphy followed with a two-run double to left field to give Stockton the lead, 3-2.
The JetHawks were retired in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Nolan Blackwood pitched the ninth to pick up his fifth save.
Logan Cozart threw two scoreless innings of relief for the JetHawks.
Lancaster finished the month of May with an 18-11 record, the best in the California League. They remained two games ahead in the standings as each South Division team fell on Wednesday night.
The four-game series continues with the second game on Thursday night in Stockton. Jesus Tinoco (3-0) is scheduled to pitch against Dustin Hurlbutt (1-2). First pitch is 7:10 p.m.
