SAN JOSE, Calif. – Brian Mundell picked up his league-leading 49th RBI to put the Lancaster JetHawks on the board first, but the San Jose Giants came back to take the series opener, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.
Mundell singled home Garrett Hampson in the top of the third inning to give the JetHawks (30-27) and starter Colin Welmon (3-2) an early lead.
The Giants (24-33) would come back in the bottom of the third to tie and take the lead. Gio Brusa bunted for a hit to begin the inning and scored on a two-out Ronnie Jebavy double. Jebavy promptly scored on a Ryan Howard hit.
San Jose added two more runs in the fifth inning on a T.J. Bennett home run.
Welmon allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings. He struck out four and issued one walk.
Logan Cozart tossed two scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.
Wes Rogers walked to leadoff the sixth inning and moved to second base on an error before stealing third. He scored on a Mylz Jones single to cut the Giants lead to two. The JetHawks would load the bases with two outs in the sixth but Wilson Soriano grounded out to third to end the threat.
Menez allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings to pick up the win.
Giants relievers Caleb Simpson earned his second save.
