RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – The Lancaster JetHawks clinched the South Division First Half Championship and their sixth consecutive playoff berth with a 12-2 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Saturday night at LoanMart Field.
Brendan Rodgers, the second batter of the game, got the JetHawks started with a solo home run and they never looked back. Roberto Ramos added a two-run shot in the second inning.
Rancho Cucamonga made it 3-1 with a single tally in the bottom of the second, but that’s as close as they would get. Victor Roache and Brandon Montgomery hit back-to-back two-out doubles. Lancaster scored the next nine runs in the game.
The JetHawks added a pair in the third and scored four times in the fourth inning to break open the game. Hamlet Marte and Brian Mundell each delivered RBI doubles. Yonathan Daza came through with a two-run single, his third consecutive hit.
Sam Hilliard tripled and scored on Mundell’s RBI groundout in the sixth. Robbie Perkins hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh, his first in High-A in his second game as a JetHawk.
Jethawks Pitcher Jesus Tinoco
Jesus Tinoco (5-1) tossed six strong innings and struck out five. He allowed one run on seven hits. The right-hander escaped trouble in the first inning after surrendering a leadoff double and a two-out walk. He fanned a pair in the frame.
Devin Smeltzer (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in just 3.1 innings. It was only his third start with the Quakes. He had a 2.08 ERA through his first two starts, spanning 13 innings. It is now 4.41.
Here’s the box score.
The first half championship is the first for the JetHawks since 2014 and their sixth overall. They will go for their third Cal League Championship when the playoffs begin on September 6.
