Kris KristoffersonMultiple award-winning songwriter, singer and actor Kris Kristofferson is scheduled to appear at the new Santa Clarita Canyon Club at the Westfield Valencia Town Center Mall on Thursday night, January 4, 2018.

The local gig is one of several the legendary 81-year-old Kristofferson will perform on a tour that also includes a show at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills on January 13.

Kristofferson is a three-time Grammy winner who has recorded 29 albums in a nearly 50-year career, including a trio of albums as a member of The Highwaymen with longtime pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

For the past three decades, Kristofferson has performed concerts all over the world, in most recent years in a solo acoustic setting, which puts the focus on his songs, among them such early classics as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “For the Good Times,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and “Help Me Make it Through the Night.”

More recent high watermarks include the albums “A Moment of Forever” (1995), “The Austin Sessions” (1999), “This Old Road” (2006), “Closer to the Bone” (2009) and “Feeling Mortal” (2013).

Kristofferson’s current album, the two-CD “The Cedar Creek Sessions,” was recorded live at Austin, Texas’ Cedar Creek Recording Studio in 2014 and released in 2016, in time for his 80th birthday on June 22.

He’s a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and a “Best Actor” Golden Globe winner for “A Star is Born,” one of more than 70 features in his filmography.

Kristofferson is set to appear at the NSAI “50 Years of Song” concert at the Ryman in Nashville, home of the Grand Ole Opry on September 20. Also on the bill: Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Trace Adkins, Billy Dean, David Frizzell and Lori McKenna.

Texas-born and a military brat, Kristofferson was a college creative writer, rugby star and summa cum laude grad, a Golden Gloves-winner, a Rhodes scholar, Oxford grad and Army helicopter pilot who turned down a job teaching English Lit at West Point and moved to Nashville in 1965.

His real passion was songwriting, inspired by his idols Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. Kristofferson famously swept the floor at Columbia’s studios in Nashville until he met June Carter, Johnny Cash’s wife, and gave her a tape, which Cash tossed into a pile and ignored.

Several weeks later, Kristofferson landed a helicopter on Cash’s front lawn to get his attention, successfully: Cash recorded “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and Kristofferson picked up “Songwriter of the Year” at the Country Music Association awards. He landed his first record deal in 1969 with Columbia-distributed Monument Records, which released his eponymous debut album in 1970.

Advance tickets for his Santa Clarita Canyon Club show are now available here.

The venue is slated to open this winter at Town Center, in the space formerly occupied by the Red Robin restaurant, adjacent to the Sears store.

The company behind the Santa Clarita club is Sterling Venue Ventures LLC, headed by Lance Sterling, who also operates the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, The Rose in Pasadena and the Saban in Beverly Hills.
