LANCASTER – Garrett Hampson delivered three hits and drove in four to lead the Lancaster JetHawks over the Lake Elsinore Storm, 10-7, on Friday night at The Hangar.
The JetHawks struck first in the opening inning and led wire-to-wire. Sam Hilliard lined an RBI triple into the right field corner and came home on an RBI ground out by Roberto Ramos. The Storm cut the lead in half in the third. Taylor Kohlwey led off with a triple and scored on Chris Baker’s ground-out.
Hilliard and Chris Rabago each joined Hampson with three hits apiece. The JetHawks had 15 in the game. Hilliard led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single and later scored on a ground out by Hamlet Marte. Carlos Belen hit a solo homer to open the fifth inning and bring the Storm back within a run. It was the first of two long balls for him in the game.
Lancaster scored the next five runs of the contest to open up an 8-2 lead. Three came in the fifth, when Hampson, Hilliard, and Ramos all came through with RBI singles. Hampson brought home two more in the sixth with another single.
The Storm made it 8-7 with one run in the seventh and four in the eighth, but that’s as close as they would get. Kyle Overstreet hit a three-run homer and Belen blasted his second solo shot of the game.
With runners on first and second and two out for Lake Elsinore in the eighth, both runners took off with Ruddy Giron at the plate. Catcher Chris Rabago’s throw went into left field and both runners appeared to come in and score.
However, home plate umpire Mike Rains called umpire’s interference on himself and the runners were forced to return to first and second.
Giron went on to strike out looking to end the inning. Lake Elsinore’s third base coach Freddy Flores and Lancaster’s pitching coach Brandon Emanuel were each ejected by Rains following the controversial call.
The JetHawks scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hampson and Yonathan Daza each drove in a run.
Brandon Gold (3-0) earned his third straight win for the JetHawks. The right-hander scattered 10 hits and allowed just two earned runs in six and one-third innings. He struck out four. Gold has not issued a walk in his first 25.1 innings with the JetHawks and has 20 strikeouts.
J.D. Hammer recorded the final four outs to pick up his fifth save in six opportunities.
Lake Elsinore starter Logan Allen (1-2) suffered the loss. The left-hander allowed six runs on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Here’s the box score.
