LANCASTER – The Lancaster JetHawks rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and held on for a 6-5 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday night at The Hangar.
In the decisive frame, Sam Hilliard and Roberto Ramos started the inning with singles. After Hamlet Marte struck out swinging, Wes Rogers delivered a two-run triple. Later in the inning, Wilson Soriano came through with an RBI single, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Soriano’s personal highlight of the night came in the third. With the JetHawks down 2-0, he opened the home half of the frame with his first home run of the season and second of his nine-year professional career. Collin Ferguson would later tie the game with an RBI single.
JetHawks Right-Fielder Yonathan Daza
The JetHawks took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth when Yonathan Daza, the league’s leading hitter, came up with an RBI single. San Jose made it 3-3 on a solo homer by John Polonius in the top of the fifth.
Ferguson had to leave the game with an injury in the bottom of the fifth inning. He led off with a double and then appeared to hurt his left knee when he slid into third base later in the frame. Ramos replaced him as a pinch runner and later took over at first base.
San Jose rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth inning against JetHawks reliever Logan Cozart, but Alexander Guillen was able to work out of a big jam and keep the JetHawks in front by a run. Guillen was summoned with the bases loaded and one out and retired both hitters he faced in the inning. He remained on for the ninth and recorded his seventh save, striking out one.
The Giants got a two-out single from Jonah Arenado in the ninth and he advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Dillon Dobson grounded out to second to end the game.
Peter Lambert started for the JetHawks, but pitched only three innings. He retired the first seven he faced and allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out three. Helmis Rodriguez (3-2) earned the win in relief with four solid innings. He scattered six hits, gave up one run, and struck out three.
David Owen (3-1) suffered the loss in relief for San Jose. He allowed three runs on six hits in two and two-thirds innings.
