[JAN. 11] – A memorial ride this Sunday will celebrate the life of Saugus motorcyclist Samuel George Choy, a 37-year-old father of two who was killed in a New Year’s Day collision.
Core 4, a group of sport motorcycle enthusiasts that formed in Santa Clarita in 2005, is organizing the memorial ride for their fallen friend, whom they knew as Sammy “The Hammer” Choy.
The ride begins Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Starbuck’s outlet at Bouquet and Haskell Canyon Road. From there, it will meander up Bouquet Canyon and pause at the location where Choy was killed – in the 29000 block of Bouquet, just north the Lily of the Valley mobile home park.
Choy was riding his 2009 Yamaha R-1 on that Sunday morning when he tried to pass a slower-moving Kia Forte on the left, just as it began a left turn into a driveway. Choy and his bike collided with the passenger car, and both catapulted over it. Choy died at the scene. The family in the Kia sustained only minor injuries.
Choy was buried at Eternal Valley Cemetery, and memorial services were held at Blessed Kateri Catholic Church.
For six days beginning Sunday, the Jersey Mike’s Subs location at 26510 Bouquet Canyon (corner of Newhall Ranch Road) is helping to raise funds for Choy’s family. The restaurant will donate 25 percent of proceeds from patrons who print out and present the flier below from Jan. 15 to Jan. 20.
