The West Ranch boys soccer team advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs but needed double overtime to get there.
Connor Ashlock scored in the second overtime period to give West Ranch a 2-1 win over Cabrillo from Lompoc in the first round of the playoffs.
Brandon Dooley had a goal in the first half to give West Ranch a 1-0 lead. He assisted on Ashlock’s goal in double overtime.
West Ranch plays Paramount in the second round of the Division 3 playoffs.
The Hart boys lost to Norte Vista, 4-0, in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs.
The Saugus boys were also shut out in their first round playoff game, 2-0, to Nipomo.
Daniel Stratton had a big game for Santa Clarita Christian in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs. He scored three goals and had three assists in Santa Clarita Christian’s 8-0 win over La Sierra Academy.
The Trinity boys lost, 4-0, to West Shores in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs.
There are a full slate of girls soccer playoff games today.
The Saugus girls are home against Tesoro in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.
The Hart girls host Chaminade in their first-round playoff game.
Valencia travels to Redlands.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls are on the road and play Vistamar in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs.
In the CIF girls basketball playoffs, Valencia beat Knight, 64-36, in the wild-card round of the Division 1AA playoffs.
The Vikings will face nationally ranked and top-seeded Long Beach Poly in the first round on Saturday.
Jennifer Anumba scored 17 points to lead Valencia. Teammate Kalia Summerlin had 13.
The Golden Valley girls lost to Arroyo Grande in the first round of the Division 3AAA playoffs. Caitlyn Zindroski scored 19 points for Golden Valley.
On the boys side, West Ranch is home against Paramount in the first round of the Division 1A playoffs tonight.
Canyon plays Godinez in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs.
The Saugus boys travel to Inglewood for their Division 2AA playoff game.
The Trinity boys are home against Arshag Dickranian in the first round of the Division 6 playoffs at The Master’s College.
In college softball, the College of the Canyons swept a doubleheader against Moorpark College. COC won the first game, 12-4, and the nightcap, 10-3.
The Cougars are undefeated and have won their first seven games of the season.
In baseball, Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter died from brain cancer on Thursday. He was 57. Carter played one season for the Los Angeles Dodgers and was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
He set the National League record for most games caught. He played for the Montreal Expos, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and Dodgers. Carter was a two-time All-Star Game MVP and played on the 1986 Mets team that won the World Series over the Boston Red Sox.
In hockey, the Kings lost to the visiting Phoenix Coyotes, 1-0. The Kings are the lowest scoring team in the NHL and have been shut out seven times this season.
