A Hart High graduate might end up as the best collegiate softball player in the nation.
Jessica Shults, a junior at Oklahoma, is one of 25 finalists for the USA Softball collegiate player of the year. She is hitting .413 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs in 41 games for Oklahoma.
In high school softball, Hart won the fifth-place game in the Woodbridge Tournament, 7-5, over Torrance.
The Indians scored five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and win the Silver Bracket tournament game.
Jenae Coleman had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run for Hart. Teammate Sydney Troxel tripled and drove in two runs.
Tracy Chandless hit a three-run homer in Hart’s 5-2 win over Long Beach Wilson in the fifth-place semifinals. Coleman also drove in a run against Wilson.
In auto racing, it was another rough weekend for the teams for Bryan Herta Autosport.
Alex Tagliani, driving for the team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta, was 21st in the Izod IndyCar Series race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. He fought an overheating engine and crashed midway through the race.
Will Power, driving for Team Penske, won his second Grand Prix of Long Beach race in a row.
In the Firestone Indy Lights race, Nick Andries, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport, was 13th at Long Beach. Esteban Guerrieri won the Indy Lights race.
In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley was 10th in the inaugural race at Havasu 95 Speedway.
Derek Thorn won the race, the first West Series win of his career. Dylan Kwasniewski, Pursley’s teammate at Gene Price Motorsports, was third.
Pursley, the reigning West Series champion, is fifth in the West Series standings after two races.
The Kings are up 3-0 in the first round of the NHL Western Conference playoffs after a 1-0 shutout over the Vancouver Canucks.
Dustin Brown scored the lone goal of the game in the third period to break a scoreless tie. Jonathan Quick recorded his second career playoff shutout making 41 saves.
Game 4 of the Western Conference playoffs is Wednesday night at Staples Center.
