[LACo Animal Control] – Gordo, a four-month pit bull mix puppy, was brought to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on April 18, 2012. Gordo’s care takers brought him to the animal care center after his previous owner allegedly threw him against a wall and repeatedly kicked him, while under the influence of drugs.
“Animal directed violence can be a felony crime,” said County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) Director, Marcia Mayeda. “Animal cruelty usually precedes human violence and in this instance, we are fortunate that Gordo is still alive,” Mayeda said.
According to DACC veterinary staff, Gordo suffered a fractured lateral condyle on his right elbow and will need to undergo surgery to repair it. Gordo remains in good spirits, and is otherwise healthy. “Staff and volunteers love him. He’s got a great personality and will make a wonderful companion pet when he heals,” Mayeda said.
Although this case remains under investigation, DACC is asking for the public’s help in raising the necessary funds for Gordo’s surgery.
The Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation’s (ACF) “Dreams Come True” fund exists to help pets like Gordo, which come to our animal care centers with extraordinary needs and helps fund special surgeries and procedures. The Fund saves the lives of pets whose injuries (or illnesses) are too extensive and too costly to treat through the normal course of shelter veterinary services.
Donations can be made directly on the ACF’s website at http://www.lacountyanimals.org/donate.html. Just be sure to mark your donation “Gordo”. You can also mail your donation to:

As a reminder, DACC urges the public to call their local animal control agency if animal cruelty is suspected in their neighborhood. For life threatening emergencies to animals, please call 911.
