Ana Borges drives it for the Blue Heat
[SC Blue Heat] – Meeting the Pali Blues for the second time in three games, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat lost a hard fought match, 1-0 in the 92nd minute of play on Saturday.
Pali came out strong in the first half, with a combination of shots and corner plays in the 22nd, 27th and 37th minutes, which were successfully blocked or punched out by Blue Heat Goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo. The second half saw a battle between both teams with 7 fouls per squad, Jacobo continuing to make stellar saves and limited scoring opportunities on both sides. Ultimately, Pali outshot the Blue Heat 16-7, but solid performances by Edite Fernandes, Ana Borges, Nadia Link and Dinora Garza kept the game within reach for the Blue Heat. Cynthia Jacobo ended the game with 7 saves, just missing the last-second shot by Pali’s Servet Uzunlar before the final whistle blew.
“This was a tough loss for our team, especially when it appeared that the game would end in a draw,” said Head Coach Charles Martinez. “I am proud of how the players worked this week to step up their game for a very strong Pali team. At the end of the day, Cynthia’s performance was exceptional and the real motivation for her entire team.”
The Blue Heat returns home to face the Victoria Highlanders next Sunday, June 10 at Valencia High School at 2:00 pm, before heading out on a five game road trip to Colorado and the Pacific Northwest. Visit www.SCBlueHeat.com for schedules, photos, highlights and ticket information.
