Allyson Felix
Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix will compete in the 100 for the US Olympic team after Jeneba Tarmoh conceded her spot and decided to withdraw from competing in a runoff to determine the final spot on the team.
Felix and Tarmoh tied for third place at the US Olympic Trials in the 100 at Eugene, Ore., last week. The two were scheduled to have a runoff to break the tie tonight.
But Tarmoh told the Associated Press in an e-mail that she did not want to have a runoff and will accept being the alternate for Team USA in the race at the London Summer Games.
“I understand that with this decision I am no longer running the 100m dash in the Olympic Games and will be an alternate for the event,” Tarmoh wrote in an e-mail sent to USA Track and Field.
Felix and Tarmoh are eligible to compete on the 4×100 relay team at the Olympics. Felix also qualified for the 200 winning the Olympic Trial race on Saturday.
She won the race with a personal best 21.69 seconds. She won silver medals in the 200 at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
In swimming, Hart High grad Anthony Ervin had one last chance to make the US Olympic team and didn’t let the opportunity slip away.
Ervin made the US Olympic team with a second-place finish in the 50 meter final. He turned in a 21.60 effort, .01 seconds behind Cullen Jones, the 50 freestyle winner at the Olympic Trials.
Ervin won a gold medal in the 50 freestyle at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, but has not competed since 2003. He is making his first trip back to the Olympics since the 2000 Summer Games.
In hockey, the Kings and Dustin Penner agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million deal.
Penner scored only seven goals in 65 games with the Kings last season. He played on the line with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter in the NHL playoffs and scored the winning goal in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Dodgers will have two players at the All Star Game in Kansas City next week, but only one will play.
Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw were selected to the National League All Star team. Kemp is on the disabled list and isn’t expected to return until July 13 against the San Diego Padres.
But Kemp said he will participate in the home run derby at the All Star game. He is the captain of the National League home run derby team.
On the field, the Dodgers beat the Mets, 8-3, avoided the sweep and snapped their seven-game losing streak.
The Dodgers still have lost 10 of their past 12 games and are a game behind the Giants for the lead in the National League West standings.
The Reds are in town for a game against the Dodgers tonight. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.
