A Santa Clarita Valley man was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of assult with a deadly weapon after allegedly taking a shot at his cousin in a house north of Castaic.
The incident was reported at 8:20 a.m. when the victim, a man whose name has not been released, called 9-1-1 from the McDonald’s restaurant in Gorman. He had driven there from his 200-acre ranch several miles away in the 47000 block of Old Ridge Route Road, where the attempted shooting occurred.
Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said Joaquin Bin, age 45 or 46 (born in 1966), got into an argument with his cousin at the latter’s home, where Bin was staying. Hershey said Bin reportedly pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot his cousin. As the intended victim was running away, he heard what sounded like a gunshot.
Hershey said the bullet didn’t hit him and presumably lodged itself somewhere in the house.
The victim drove to Gorman to place the call and told deputies his cousin, Bin, was driving a light truck loaded with furniture, as he was in the process of moving to another residence in the area.
For some unknown reason, Bin apparently remained at the house until a police helicopter started hovering overhead. Bin started pulling out of the driveway as the chopper arrived, Hershey said. Bin drove a short distance but by that time, sheriff’s squad cars were arriving, too. Seeing the police units, Bin gave himself up while still on the ranch property and was taken into custody around 11 a.m.
Hershey said Bin was would likely face charges of assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a firearm.
