Valencia and Saugus advanced to the semifinals of the Valley Invitational Baseball League playoffs after impressive wins.
Valencia shut out Woodland Hills, 10-0, behind the offensive pop of Keston Hiura and A.J. Balta.
Hiura hit a three-run home run and Balta added a two-run shot for Valencia.
Holden Mehr tossed the complete-game shutout striking out three.
The Vikings will play Valley North in the semifinals on Friday.
Saugus beat second-seeded Harvard-Westlake, 6-3, scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Jonah Kapp was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.
Caden Salkeld was 2-for-3 and Dylan Freyre drove in a run in the fourth inning.
Saugus plays Loyola on Friday.
In soccer, the United States women’s team beat France, 4-2, in its first game at the Summer Olympics in London.
The United States scored four unanswered goals to erase a 2-0, first-half deficit. Carli Lloyd came off the bench and broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the second half.
Alex Morgan scored two goals in the game for the United States. Her first goal tied the score, 2-2, in the first half. Her second goal gave the United States a two-goal lead in the second half.
The United States plays Columbia in its next game on Saturday.
In baseball, Hanley Ramirez had quite a debut with the Dodgers, but it wasn’t enough to produce a win against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Ramirez, who was acquired by the Dodgers in a trade with the Miami Marlins, tripled in his first at-bat and scored. But the Dodgers lost to the Cardinals, 3-2, in 12 innings.
Ramirez had two hits, a walk and drove in a run in his first game with the Dodgers. But the Dodgers have lost two straight to the Cardinals.
