Alysia Montano
Canyon High graduate Alysia Montano begins her quest for an Olympic medal today in the 800 meters at the Summer Games in London.The first round of qualifying for the 800 starts this morning.
Montano won the 800 meters at the US Olympic Trials in Oregon last month. She is the second-ranked 800 meter runner in the world. Pamela Jelimo of Kenya won the gold medal in the 800 in 2008 Olympics and is the top-ranked runner in the world in the 800.
College of the Canyons track coach Lashinda Demus races in the 400 meter hurdles final this afternoon at the Summer Olympics in London.
She is the third-fastest qualifier in the race. Demus won the world championship in the 400 meter hurdles in 2011.
Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix races in the 200 meter final this afternoon in pursuit of her first Olympic gold medal in the event.
She won her heat race in the semfinals to advance to the 200 final. She won silver medals in the 200 at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.
In golf, Valencia High’s Alison Lee advanced to match play in the US Women’s Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Cleveland.
Hart High graduate Kendall Dusenberry did not qualify.
Lee shot a 1-under 71 and finished in a tie for third place after the first two rounds of the US Women’s Amateur Championship.
She was 5-under in the first two rounds of stroke play. Hyo-Joo Kim of South Korea had the low score in the first two rounds at 8-under.
Lee will play Andrea Lee in the first round of match play today.
In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Rockies, 3-1, and fell a little farther out of first place in the National League West standings.
The Dodgers have lost two games in a row to the Rockies and have scored only one run in the both games.
The Dodgers are a game and a half behind the National League West leading Giants, who beat the Cardinals, 4-2.
The Dodgers and Rockies conclude their series tonight.
