Registration is now open for a variety of free fall classes offered through the Santa Clarita Public Library’s Parent-Teacher Enrichment Resource Center. Classes are designed to enrich homeschooled students’ learning and educational experiences.
Registration is now open for the following courses:
Science in September
Three Thursday sessions on September 6, 13 and 27, 2012 beginning at 2:45 p.m.
This course is designed for 5th-12th grade students and covers facts about the largest living creatures, the smallest creatures and how they interact with each other in the intricate web of life on earth.
Art in October
Three Thursday sessions on October 4, 11 and 18, 2012 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
This course is designed for 9th-12th grade students.
On October 4, the course A Brief Stroll through the History of Western Art will provide a short introduction to the art of Europe and the Americas.
On October 11, the course Where the Modern World was Born: How the Renaissance Changed Everything will provide a closer look at Renaissance Art.
On October 18, the course Art, Beauty, and Reality will cover abstract art.
Narrative in November
Three Thursday sessions on November 2, 9, and 16, 2012 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
This course is designed for 9th-12th grade students.
On November 2, the course will encourage students to analyze first person narrative passages from To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, and The Old Man and the Sea and students will write a personal narration.
On November 9, the course titled Response to Literature will include students writing responses after reading Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’ and passages from a Shakespearean sonnet.
On November 16, the course Essays on Demand will help students work with sample SAT and AP writing test prompts, learn techniques such as dissecting and attacking a prompt, and teach how to synthesize quotes into an essay.
To register for any of these free classes, Santa Clarita Public Library cardholders should visit the “Events” tab at santaclaritalibrary.com and click on the specific class title to sign up.
The Parent-Teacher Enrichment Resource Center, located at the Valencia branch, provides parents and home educators with a variety of free educational resources and learning materials tailored to the educational needs of instructors as well as local public, private, and homeschool students. Resources include an assortment of teaching aids, textbooks, and learning materials and all materials are available free of charge and follow state grade level standards.
In addition to these resources, the Enrichment Resource Center offers a variety of print and audiovisual materials with books on teaching, special needs education, learning theory, artwork and parenting. Test-preparation materials and hard-to-find titles selected from curricular book lists with engaging activities are also available for checkout at the Valencia branch.
Community members must present a Santa Clarita Public Library card to check out materials from the Parent-Teacher Enrichment Resource Center.
