You got a sense in June that when the Cincinnati Reds chose former Saugus shortstop Zach Vincej in the 37th round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, they were getting a steal.
After all, Vincej, a former third baseman on Team USA’s 16-&-under team, hit .339 for Pepperdine this past spring, was an Honorable Mention All-American, and won the Brooks Wallace Award as the nation’s top collegiate shortstop.
For all those who passed him up in the previous 36 rounds, Vincej is proving them wrong on the field.
He is hitting .421 for the Billings Mustangs in the Rookie Pioneer League, with a home run and 11 RBI. His .421 batting average is 53 points above the next best player on the Mustangs, and he has committed just three errors at short.
Billings sits on top of the 8-team Pioneer League.
