The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library group is now accepting membership from residents who wish to get involved in the many volunteer opportunities available through the Santa Clarita Public Library.
The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library is an active group of residents who volunteer, advocate and fundraise to meet the needs of the Santa Clarita Public Library. One of the group’s most successful efforts is the annual Summer Reading Program, which provides funds for new materials and financially supports programming for children, families and adults throughout the year.
“The Friends organization is an invaluable part of the Santa Clarita Public Library,” says Mayor Frank Ferry. “Not only do volunteers foster a positive relationship between the library and community, they promote reading and literacy while shaping the library’s future.”
By becoming a member, the community not only shows their support of libraries but their support for private citizens who volunteer. A Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library membership allows members a first look at upcoming special events throughout the year like the “members-only book sale” on Thursday, September 6 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the old Newhall Branch Library, located at 22704 W. 9th Street.
The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library is seeking new members as the group prepares for the opening of the new Old Town Newhall Library at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The new, state-of-the-art, 30,000 square foot Old Town Newhall Library includes a children’s library, teen room, more than 100 public use computers, a fireplace reading room, community meeting areas, outdoor courtyard and much more.
In addition to the grand opening, the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library is sponsoring three FREE upcoming events at the new Old Town Newhall Library. On Tuesday, October 16, the co-founder of Choclatique Ed Engoron will present an evening of chocolate history and tasting. Award winning author, Alan Brennert will visit the branch on Thursday, November 8, to discuss his writings and new book, Palisades Park. Then on Tuesday, December 4, New York Times best-selling author Dustin Thomason will debut his newest novel 12?21. All events begin at 7:00 p.m. and seating is on a first come, first served basis.
