The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims of Tuesday’s early morning accident on the southbound I-5 yesterday as 42 year-old Latonya Renee Sutton-Grey and her 6 year-old daughter Layoni Grey. They reported killed immediately in the crash. Both were from Los Angeles. Four other crash victims were sent to the hospital, including three children who were airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
According to the Fort Tejon office of the California Highway Patrol, Sutton-Grey was driving her Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on I-5 north of SR 138 at an undetermined speed. For an unknown reason, she allowed the car to drift to the left and collide with the guardrail located in the center median. After the collision, the driver overcorrected to the right and proceeded to roll over across the #1 and #2 lane, where it came to rest facing a westerly direction.
A 65-year old passenger, identified as Edith Sutton, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and three minors – aged 2, 11 and 16 – were airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
The accident was reported at 5:10 a.m. A Sigalert was declared on the southbound I-5 just north of Highway 138 and all lanes were closed; traffic began moving slowly along the right shoulder about an hour later.
The accident was cleared shortly after 12:30 p.m. and all lanes reopened.
