The Canyon football team is No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll for the second week in a row.
Canyon is undefeated and has won its first three games of the season. The Cowboys are averaging 53 points per game.
The Hart football team is No. 2 after a 51-3 blowout against La Palma Kennedy.
The Valencia football team dropped to No. 9 after losing its first two games of the season. The Vikings and Palos Verdes are the only 0-2 teams ranked in the Northern Division top 10.
The Trinity Classical Academy team is ranked No. 3 in the Southern Section Division II 8-man football poll.
The runners from the Foothill League took over the Seaside Invitational in Ventura over the weekend.
Valencia’s Maddie Dignadice won the girls senior cross country race in 17 minutes, 26.28 seconds over the 2.9-mile course.
Three other runners from the Foothill League won their races. Valencia’s Austin Fischer won the freshman boys race.
Golden Valley’s Bianca Tinoco won the freshman girls race.
Hart’s Ruben Rubira won the boys sophomore race.
The Saugus girls, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division II poll, didn’t produce a race winner, but they recorded the fastest team time at the meet. Olivia Altieri was fourth and Nina Sassano was fifth in the girls senior race and paced their team to a combined 88 minutes, 49 seconds.
In college cross country, John Gilbertson from The Master’s College won the men’s race at the Adidas/UC Irvine Invitational in 24 minutes, 41 seconds.
Teammate Anthony Pizzo was 10th and The Master’s College men finished fifth out of 19 teams at the meet.
Saugus High graduate Karis Frankian was the highest-finishing woman for The Master’s College at the UC Irvine Invitational. She was 16th in 18 minutes, 6 seconds.
The Master’s College women were seventh out of 14 teams at the meet.
In baseball, the Dodgers are in Arizona to start a series with the Diamondbacks. After losing two of three games to the Giants over the weekend and dropping 5 ½ games out of first place in the National League West standings, the Dodgers turn their attention toward the wild card.
The Dodgers are 1 ½ games behind the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals in the wild card standings.
The Dodgers will send Clayton Kershaw to the mound against the Diamondbacks. Arizona counters with Ian Kennedy.
