The West Ranch football team lost to St. Francis, 38-30. West Ranch led by nine points, 23-14, in the third quarter. But St. Francis outscored West Ranch, 24-7, in the fourth quarter to win the game.
Saugus lost to Taft at Woodland Hills, 48-20. It was the fourth loss in a row for the Centurions.
Golden Valley lost, 49-6, to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. The Grizzlies were down 42-0 at halftime and are 0-4 to start the season.
The Santa Clarita Christian football team beat Mark Keppel, 27-0, to win its second game in a row. Quarterback Jonathan Saavedra threw for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
The Trinity football team beat Fulton Prep, 48-8, behind a six-touchdown game from quarterback Dakota Prochnow. He threw four touchdown passes and rushed for two TDS.
In college football, the College of the Canyons won its first game of the season, 36-14, over Pasadena City College.
The USC Trojans, ranked No. 13 in the country, beat Cal, 27-9, at the Coliseum.
The UCLA Bruins lost their first game of the season, 27-20, to Oregon State.
In baseball, Hart High graduate James Shield recorded a record-breaking strikeout over the weekend for the Tampa Bay Rays. He struck out Toronto’s JP Arencibia and the Rays set the American League single season record for strikeouts by a team. The Rays pitching staff needed two strikeouts to break the mark of 1,264 Ks set by the New York Yankees in 2001.
The Dodgers beat the Reds, 5-3, to stay alive in the National League wild card race. But time is running out for the Dodgers. There are only nine games remaining, starting Tuesday in San Diego against the Padres.
