It’s only once a year that you can sample 27 different kinds of chili for $5.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is inviting the community to its annual Fun in the Sun Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics of Southern California. Other featured charities this year are LASD Motorsports, which provides positive role models for teens through motorsport activities, and Wives Behind the Badge, a support forum for wives of peace officers.
Held at Pitchess Detention Center’s Jack Bones Equestrian Center, the Cook-off promises a fun-filled afternoon, with live music, food vendors and LASD demonstrations of everything from horses to helicopters.
This year, the Chili Cook-off will welcome bands like Von Cotton, Into the Mix, and Snafu to their stage. The Special Olympics Dancers will also be featured.
In addition to chili, guests can expect to enjoy burgers and hot dogs grilled by Wives Behind the Badge, Dippin’ Dots and Jamba Juice vendors, and much more. Kids will enjoy the bounces houses, petting zoo, and pony rides.
Chili competitors will be judged in three categories: sweet, mild and hot. The LASD also encourages people to purchase chili cards ($5 for adults, $3 for children), which entitles them to taste each entry and vote for the “People’s Choice” award.
The Cook-off is accepting competitors up to the day of the event. If you are interested in entering, email chilicookoff@lasd.org or click here for the application.
