John Gilbertson from The Master’s College was selected as the NAIA national men’s cross country runner of the week after winning the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara University.
Gilbertson broke two records in winning the 8K race. He finished the course in 23 minutes, 40 seconds, breaking The Master’s College school record. His time was also a course record at Baylands Park.
He has won four cross country races this year. It was the second time Gilbertson was selected as the NAIA national runner of the week.
In high school golf, the West Ranch girls won the Foothill League championship and Hart’s Jamie Corr won the league MVP on the last day of the Newhall Cup at the TPC at Valencia.
But the story of the day belonged to the Golden Valley girls.
They finished in second place in league and earned a postseason berth for the first time in school history.
Corr shot a 2-over 38 to win her fifth league tournament of the year. Golden Valley freshman Elisa Pierre shot 6-over 42. Corr won her second league MVP by six strokes over Pierre.
In high school volleyball, Valencia swept Golden Valley in three games and the Vikings won their sixth Foothill League match of the season.
Sierra Sanchez had 15 kills to lead Valencia.
In college soccer, The Master’s College women lost to Westmont, 4-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
Ashley Correa scored a hat trick for Westmont, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA.
The Master’s College, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, fell to 9-4-2 overall, 4-3 in conference.
In college golf, the College of the Canyons women shot a 333 and finished in second place in a Western State Conference tournament at the Brookside course in Pasadena.
COC was seven shots behind Glendale College, the winner of the match. Kristin Grimes shot the low round for the Lady Cougars, an 8-over 80.
In the NBA preseason, the Clippers beat the Utah Jazz, 96-94, behind a 23-point performance by Blake Griffin.
He scored 11 points in the third quarter and had five steals in the game.
