[CSSA] – CSU students just completed a major system wide voter registration effort that has added 31,372 new voters in California. The second and final phase of this effort – voter mobilization – will continue now through Election Day on Tuesday, November 6. . Sponsored by the California State Student Association (CSSA), the 23 CSU campuses encouraged students to become more active in and to vote in the 2012 General Election.
Campuses from San Diego to Humboldt participated in the bold initiative, recognizing that this election will directly impact CSU students. Each of the campuses agreed on a goal of registering 10 percent of its student population. San Diego State and San Francisco State led the CSU by registering 4,413 and 4,060, respectively. Other campuses that registered more than 10 percent include CSU Chico, Humboldt State, Cal Maritime Academy, CSU San Marcos and Sonoma State.
“I am proud of our organization’s efforts and those of the student leaders throughout the CSU in registering over 30,000 new eligible California voters, said Pedro Ramirez, Vice President of Legislative Affairs for CSSA. “This shows that CSU students are committed to protecting our state’s system of higher education by voting for Proposition 30 and voting for candidates that support the CSU.”
During this election season, campuses hosted local and state-wide candidate debates, large-scale rallies, and other ‘Get Out the Vote’ efforts to increase the number of registered students and their understanding of the various Propositions.
In the final days remaining before the election, CSU students will continue to educate voters on the impacts of the election and, more importantly, implement strategies to get students to the polls on Nov. 6.
It is the mission of the California State Student Association to maintain and enhance access to an affordable, quality public higher education for the people of California to the California State University. As the single recognized voice for the 412,000 students of the CSU system, CSSA is the acknowledged statewide student association representing, serving and protecting the collective interests of students in the CSU system.
