New York runners displaced by Hurricane Sandy joined more than 5,000 Santa Clarita residents at the the Santa Clarita Marathon Sunday, Nov. 4, which was also an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.
The day included a full marathon, a half marathon, a 5K and a Kid K run. All races began at 7 a.m., with the exception of the Kid K, which began at 8:30 a.m.
“There were 80 last minute sign-ups at the health and fitness expo on Saturday and many of those came from participants that were suppose to run the now postponed New York Marathon.” said Patrick Downing, Santa Clarita Marathon Director.
Twenty-six different states were represented at the marathon as well as many different countries, including Canada, Mexico, Australia and Guatemala, home to the top female runner Petra Mullers. She ran the marathon in 3:08:55.
The winner of the marathon, Jeffrey Jackson, is a Santa Clarita local and student at The Master’s College who finished with a time of 2:30:52. Second place was Ryland Del Valle from Canyon Country and third was Ricardo Ramirez from Sun Valley.
This year’s Marathon Race Committee also made use of the newly open trails along San Francisquito Creek. The new trail system was used for the majority of the marathon to help reduce the amount of street closure on McBean Parkway.
