In 2012, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hosted by College of the Canyons experienced its most successful operational year to date, with SBDC assisted clients combining to start 53 new small businesses and create or retain 937 local jobs.
“Over the past year SBDC clients achieved record breaking results across every significant category,” said SBDC Executive Director Steve Tannehill. “Now in our sixth year of operation, the SBDC’s high level of success continues to grow as we develop more partnerships, launch new programs and expand our roster of expert business advisors.”
The SBDC’s recently released 2012 annual report details a record year of client accomplishments and efficiency ratings which highlight the Center’s continued success in providing actionable advice, training and consulting services to local small business owners throughout the region.
In 2012, the SBDC provided no-cost consulting services to 869 small businesses and directly trained more than 3,100 entrepreneurs and small business owners at its 10 offices located throughout the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and Antelope Valleys.
“We appreciate the continued support of our community and our many business partners,” said SBDC Assistant Director Catherine Grooms. “Without them the SBDC would not be the effective business resource that it is today. We look forward to serving our local business community in 2013 and beyond.”
In addition to creating new jobs and businesses, SBDC clients saw their sales grow by a combined $19 million in 2012, while securing $12.5 million of new capital — figures which represent a roughly 169 percent increase since 2009.
Other key business statistics revealed in the SBDC’s 2012 annual report indicate that SBDC clients also saw an average increase of $4,720 in new sales and $3,107 in new capital raised for every hour of consulting received — while combining to create an average of one new business every week.
