A local resident helped Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies arrest a man they’ve been looking for since Wednesday, said SCV Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Hershey.

“A guy was on the bike path and said he saw someone matching the description (of Corey Kieffer),” Hershey said. “He thought he saw him and he told us to meet him.”

The observant cyclist was Rick Quorp of Canyon Country.

“I was riding my bike on the bike path,” Quorp told SCVNews.com, “and I noticed a guy walking next to the path under the Whites Canyon bridge with no shoes on. I took a look at him as I passed by and I recognized him as the shooting suspect.

“I rode by and called the sheriff and circled back to contain the suspect and waited for the deputies’ arrival, about five to 10 minutes,” Quorp said.

Kieffer, 28, of Canyon Country, was found with his girlfriend, who had an outstanding $250,000 warrant for her arrest.

Both Kieffer and his girlfriend were taken to the hospital for medical attention. Kieffer had an injury on his hand, but Hershey said he didn’t have any reports of Kieffer resisting arrest, and it was likely the pair were getting treated for dehydration.

“I think they were probably pooped out, tired,” Hershey said. “They’d been on the run for a couple of days.”

Hershey said the treatment could take a while, but then he expected the couple to be booked back at the station this afternoon.

Kieffer, in addition to being sought for a no-bail warrant in a burglary, is also wanted in connection for an incident Wednesday, when he allegedly pulled a gun out of his backpack and aimed it at deputies.

Pointing a gun at someone is considered assault in the California penal code, so it’s likely that Kieffer is facing charges for assaulting a peace officer in Wednesday’s incident.

The alleged assault sparked a several-hour manhunt that shut down traffic near Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country on Wednesday.

Deputies spent the next day searching for Kieffer’s weapon, but detectives have not released whether a gun they found in the wash near where Kieffer was thought to be hiding was, in fact, the weapon he allegedly pointed at deputies.

“They’re probably dehydrated. They’ve been running around for two days,” Hershey said of Kieffer. “But they wil be booked here.”
