College of the Canyons freshman jumper Tim White completed his first season as a Cougar with a state championship on Saturday afternoon in the triple jump. White, posted a leap of 51 feet, 3 1/2 inches to win an individual state title in the triple jump, bringing home the first jumping honor in the program’s history.
The Hart High School alumnus handily beat his competition by more than three inches, as Fresno City College’s Vernon Sampson came in second after turning in a jump of 47-11 3/4. White, who went into the meet as the favorite, is the state leader among California Community College triple jumpers and ranks No. 2 nationally this season with a 52 feet best.
The feat marks the fifth individual state title for COC’s men’s track and field program and the third consecutive year that head coach Lindie Kane has cultivated a male state champion. COC’s Chris Low won the state’s top award in the 800-meter run in 2011 and 2012.
The athletc department brought home two state championships in the span of a week, marking the 21st and 22nd titles for the college. COC’s men’s golf team won a state title last Monday.
Freshman Anthony Fowler also competed in the state meet in the 400-meter dash and finished in eighth place with a time of 48.97 seconds. College of the Sequoias’ Akeem Alexander won the event in a time of 47.00 seconds.
