KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2013 NAIA Baseball All-America teams, selected by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association (NAIA-BCA) All-America Selection Committee.
Two Mustangs highlighted the All-American selections: Steven Karkenny (Chatsworth, CA) earning first-team honors, and A.J. Work (Boise, ID), who received honorable mention, respectively.
Karkenny, a sophomore, produced a .348 batting average fo 11 home runs, 50 runs, scored, 25 stolen bases, and a GSAC-high 59 rbi. On April 30, Karkenny earned the GSAC’s Player of the Year award, and was named to the conference’s Golden Glove team.
Work capped a stellar four-year career with the Mustangs by going 13-4, posting a 2.40 ERA, and striking out 80 batters in 123.2 innings. The senior southpaw became TMC’s winningest pitcher and was named the GSAC’s Pitcher of the Year on April 30.
Karkenny and Work led TMC to its most successful season in program history where it concluded the regular-season schedule with a first-place finish in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and a No. 7 ranking in the NAIA. A 44-17 record included a GSAC Tournament championship and an NAIA World Series Opening Round tournament championship qualified the Mustangs for their first NAIA World Series appearance in 13 years.
