The Small Business Development Center (SBDC), hosted by College of the Canyons, has hired two new business advisors—Sylvia Martini and Miriam Aguilar—to help the SBDC meet the growing demands for its free consulting services.
“We are very pleased to welcome Sylvia and Miriam to the SBDC team at College of the Canyons,” said SBDC Executive Director Steve Tannehill. “Sylvia joins us as we expand the export support services we offer through our Center for International Trade Development (CITD), while Miriam will assist us with expanding our services to the Spanish-speaking community.”
A German native, Martini earned her degree in industrial engineering from the University of Media in Stuttgart, Germany and an International Business certificate from Santa Barbara City College.
With more than 20 years of experience in international marketing and sales, Martini has worked for an automotive company and two publishing companies.
“I am pleased to assist SBDC clients in the areas of international trade, marketing, sales, public relations and web communications,” said Martini, who is a NASBITE Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP). “My passion is to improve companies’ economic stability and helping them to grow in a healthy way.”
Martini is a member of the German American Business Association (GABA), the Outstanding Professionals Employment Network (OPEN), the Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Soroptimist International of Caramillo.
“Sylvia and Miriam’s years of experience and vast expertise will provide significant benefits to the business community in the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and Antelope Valleys,” said Catherine Grooms, SBDC assistant director. “With the addition of Sylvia and Miriam, we have expanded our team to 18 advisors and are now able to serve clients in nine different languages including Spanish, Armenian, Arabic, French, Italian, Greek, German and American Sign Language.”
A certified QuickBooks Pro advisor, Aguilar will be assisting SBDC clients with business plans, business start-up assistance and QuickBooks, including the Simple Start, Pro and Premier versions. In 2006, Aguilar launched her own business, GerenciaTeam Inc., which offers training and consulting in Spanish for the Latino business community.
“I am happy to join the team of business advisors at the COC Small Business Development Center,” said Aguilar. “I look forward to assisting clients – especially Spanish speaking clients – start and grow their businesses.”
Aguilar has taught business courses at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension, Cal Poly Pomona, East Los Angeles Community College and Cerritos Community College. Aguilar earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and is currently working towards a certificate in General Business Studies at UCLA Extension.
The SBDC hosted by College of the Canyons was launched in January 2006. SBDC business advisors assist prospective and existing small business owners start, grow or expand their businesses by providing workshops, one-on-one consulting, trainings and other resources to the business community.
The SBDC’s main offices are located in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center on the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.
SBDC services are also available at nine satellite locations throughout the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys.
