[KHTS] – The Santa Clarita City Council composed a survey for residents encouraging them to give their feedback on which art piece they prefer to see in the center of the Old Town Newhall roundabout.

The roundabout intersects with Newhall Avenue, Fifth Street (which is being eliminated) and Main Street in Old Town Newhall.

The single-item Survey Monkey questionnaire was requested by the City Council in early September, after there was a split vote on whether or not members would provide guidance for the Arts Commission in choosing the Newhall roundabout centerpiece.

“We want residents to help us decide which iconic piece of art should be the centerpiece of Old Town Newhall’s roundabout project,” said Mayor Bob Kellar. “This intersection will serve as a southern gateway into the community, so we want something that reflects our past, present and future.”

Residents will be able to choose from seven responses to the question, “What type of art symbolizing Old Town Newhall’s heritage should be placed at the center of the Roundabout?”. Survey options include: a depiction of 1920’s Western film star William S. Hart or William S. Hart with his horse Fritz, an art piece in another location in Newhall (not in roundabout), landscaping, water feature, live tree, do nothing, and an opportunity to write in a concept for the City Council to consider.

“Ultimately, the arts commission will select the proposal and City Council will ratify it, but community input is very important in this particular project,” said Jeff Barber, arts and events supervisor for the city.

“We’d like the public’s input on the Newhall Roundabout project because it is essentially a public piece,” Barber said, encouraging community involvement.

Residents can fill out the questionnaire at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NewhallRoundaboutArt until the end of October.

Those who have requested information about the city’s arts and events program through their email notification center will have the survey sent to their email.

The results from the survey along with feedback from the Arts Commission will be revealed to the City Council in November at a regular City Council meeting.

round-abouts are waste of money, dangerous and if there is a way that I can bypass them by using another street, I will….business will be impacted….AND how am I going to be looking at ART as I try to navigate thru the circle, when all I wanted to do is go straight ??

  2. Linda says:

It’s hard to understand why an intersection with an already functioning signal had to be sacrificed for this monstrosity (no matter what the artwork is). For me roundabouts are a real nightmare, with cars recklessly challenging me for space in other cities’ roundabouts.

I vote for Xeriscape with modest native plants; grasses and some scrub brush; sage maybe manzanita.
