Steven Karkenny
More than two months before the first pitch of another season is thrown, The Master’s College’s Steve Karkenny has been named to the 2014 NAIA Baseball Preseason All-America Team.
The reigning GSAC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American last spring, Karkenny (Chatsworth, CA) is a member of the 17-player squad selected by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association All-America Committee that included five other 2013 first-team All-Americans.
The junior outfielder is coming off a breakthrough campaign in which he led the Mustangs to their most successful season in program history, highlighted by a 44-17 record, the club’s second GSAC regular-season title, a first-ever GSAC Tournament championship, an NAIA National Championship Opening Round triumph, and the college’s first NAIA World Series appearance in 13 years.
The right-handed hitter was the prime catalyst in those accomplishments, hitting .346, whacking 11 home runs, driving in a GSAC-best 59 runs, and stealing 25 bases en route to player of the year honors and a spot on the conference’s Gold Glove team.
Karkenny, along with his teammates, will get his first chance at living up to his preseason billing when the Mustangs open the 2014 season with a three-game series against Simpson in Redding, January 17-18. A week later, they christen their home schedule and GSAC play when they host Biola in a three-game series, January 24-25.
