The company, which ranks cities across the nation, made its determination by looking at crime statistics and FBI reports for California cities with a population more than 20,000.
Saratoga, a small bedroom community near Silicon Valley, earned the No. 1 spot this year. Santa Clarita ranked No. 37.
“Low crime is just one of the benefits of living in this progressive community,” according to SafeWise. “A focus on a healthy and creative lifestyle are two more reasons why residents are proud to call Santa Clarita home sweet home. It has hosted the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race a whopping six times and, this spring, Santa Clarita will proudly host the internationally acclaimed Wings For Life World Run.”
Santa Clarita’s post also touts the arts, culture and community in the city, mentioning events such as the Cowboy Festival.
There are 482 cities in California, according to the League of California Cities, and 296 cities have a population of at least 20,000, which was a baseline criterion.
Santa Clarita uses a contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the largest such contract for law enforcement in the county.
A Sheriff’s Department official said it takes a community effort to keep the crime rate low in any city.
“There are numerous deputies who live in this community, which helps, obviously, but it’s really about fostering a supportive and interactive relationship with the people we serve,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies are constantly looking to innovate, and programs such as our Crime Prevention Unit and J-Team help us increase interaction with the residents we serve, which are our eyes and ears throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.”
Temple City earned the highest ranking of any Los Angeles County municipality, coming in at No. 5. Calabasas (13) was the only other city outside of Santa Clarita to be ranked, from Los Angeles County cities.
In Ventura County, Moorpark (7), Agoura (14), Simi Valley (25) and Thousand Oaks (33) all made the list.
Santa Clarita ranked ahead of La Puente, La Canada-Flintridge, Benicia and San Gabriel.
Most of the cities were located in the northern half of the state, but there were several from Orange County, as well, including Rancho Santa Margarita (2).
