UPDATE 1:45PM – Interstate 5 has reopened over the Grapevine in both directions. As might be expected, traffic is backed up.
UPDATE 12:45PM – The California Highway Patrol is beginning to escort vehicles over the Grapevine. The freeway should fully reopen soon.
The California Highway Patrol has implemented a hard closure of the Interstate 5 Freeway at Templin Highway due to snow on the Grapevine.
Northbound freeway on-ramps are closed at Hasley Canyon Road and Parker Road in Castaic in order to prevent wrong-way driving when northbound motorists encounter the closure.
The Ridge Route is also closed, and access gates have been closed.
Southbound Interstate 5 traffic is stopped north of Fort Tejon.
As of noon Saturday, there is no estimate for the reopening of the freeway.
Highway 33 in Lockwood Valley, west of Frazier Park, is also closed due to heavy snow.
The National Weather Service has issued a frost warning, which remains in effect through Sunday morning as a cold front moves through the area.
Gusty west to northwest winds will develop and continue through the evening. Coastal areas will see gusts to 40 mph, increasing to 50-55 mph in the Antelope Valley.
Then, more cold air will filter into the region and temperatures will drop to 27-32 degrees, causing frost to develop. Even colder temperatures are possible overnight Sunday into Monday.
