Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe is pleased to announce the County’s Safe Surrender Program celebrated success for the first time this year with the report of a safely surrendered newborn baby girl. This most recent safe surrender occurred on January 4, 2014 at a hospital in Culver City.
As is standard practice, the newborn is in protective custody and will be placed with families approved for adoption by the Department of Children and Family Services.

“There is no better way to start the new year then to learn of the healthy and safe surrender of a newborn baby girl,” said Supervisor Knabe. “What could have been a tragic situation is instead a decision that is allowing a child a chance to be part of a loving family. As word continues to spread about the Program, others in similar situations can make the right choice for their babies and themselves, because of Safe Surrender. What better way to begin a new year than with the gift of life for this baby girl.”
This is the first Safe Surrender in Los Angeles County in 2014, and the 114th since the program began nearly 13 years ago. The program was initiated by Supervisor Knabe and approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2001. It allows someone to surrender an infant that is no more than three days old, as long as the infant shows no signs of abuse.

I think it’s great that women are allowing their unwanted babies to be saved…However, I think it is a bit invasive to announce specific dates/locations of surrenders. Let some time pass…Surely there is shame associated with surrendering a newborn baby for these moms. They don’t needs coworkers, neighbors or relatives meddling.
It is a county program and a county press release. The county asks us (and everyone else) to publish it. If you don’t think that’s a good idea, you can call Supervisor Don Knabe’s office at (213) 974-4444 and say so….
My heart goes out to the brave & courageous momma who made what I can only imagine was a heartwrenching decision. I feel for her, and hope she finds peace in knowing that she did what was best for the baby.
If making an announcement anonomously saves more lives…its a good program…
Keep abortion legal.
I read more on the program….and I found out that the mother and child are given matching anklets that share a code….the mother has 14 days to reconsider…..I think that is a well thought out part….post partum can be a major factor. ..
I guess my point is, it’s not very anonymous when they make such specific details known..
Jared Gardner, I hadn’t thought of that angle. I guess there isn’t really much justification for abortion with a great program like BabySafeLA, I can see your concern.
Sabrina A. Lapradre nicely put.
