Two collisions left two men hospitalized at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Friday, Sheriff’s Station officials said.

Hart School District board member Joe Messina said he was driving eastbound on Creekside Road around 4:45 p.m. Friday when a bicyclist crossed the road in front of him.

“This investigation is not being treated as a criminal investigation at this point, it’s being treated as a traffic incident,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

MessinaCrash011014The crash happened near the 24000 block of Creekside Road in Valencia, aka Auto Row.

The incident is still under investigation by the traffic unit.

“My heart goes out to the family of the bike rider,” Messina said. “My prayer is for a quick and speedy recovery, and I want to thank the Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department for their quick and professional response.”

The second incident involved a pedestrian crossing the street at Wiley Canyon Road, near the Walgreen’s in Newhall, around 1 p.m., Sheriff’s Station officials said.

Both collisions were under investigation. There were no arrests made in either collision, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.

  1. Tonight as we were driving down Soledad towards Whites a bicyclist shot out across all lanes …didnt get hit but was damn lucky

  2. Scott Evans Scott Evans says:

We the cyclists are forced now onto Creekside due to the bike path closure at McBean.

  3. Judi Jo Judi Jo says:

I was driving north on sierra, just south of Eternal Valley about 4 this afternoon and there was a biker taking up the entire right lane, coasting down the hill. She was doing at least 35 MPH so I wasn’t too frustrated. I was a little scared for her, though.

  4. I’m pretty sure a cyclist was hit by Walgreen’s on Newhall Ranch Rd about 1 today; drove by it. Maybe the same one as reported because there is no Walgreen’s by Wiley, is there?

  5. Michael Kent Michael Kent says:

Ditto what Scott said, but the bike rider should pay better attention when crossing.

  6. Donn Miller Donn Miller says:

damn bicyclist. what? are we in china?

  7. Andrea says:

Messina was driving and a bicyclist crossed in front of him. Is he a witness or an involved party? The information is incomplete in the article.

  8. Dorene Tapp Dorene Tapp says:

The other day my husband honked at some dumb woman on a bicycle who pulled right in front of us on Via Princess. She flipped him off! She was lucky he hit the brakes at the same time he hit the horn or she would have been road kill.

  9. The Jaguar strikes again.

  10. Carolyn Glee Carolyn Glee says:

people with children have run in front of my car, and just random people crossing large streets even though there are crosswalks closeby, it drives me nuts :( luckily I have good brakes but it’s very frustrating!!

  11. Kevin Farmer Kevin Farmer says:

Okay maybe this bicyclist didn’t deserve this, and hope he’s okay, I could not pass this post without saying something, bicyclist around here and unfortunately everywhere I’ve seen them are the biggest most disrespectful bunch of you know what. when I’m on a road like Sierra hwy or Vazquez cyn and these bicyclist make me and passengers and one of them being my pregnant girlfriend in my vehicle get over in to on coming traffic to avoid hitting them, I got news pricks one day you will be taken down by a grill on a car. Risk your own self and not others. Take your bicycling to a closed track or something for your own safety pricks

  12. All these bicyclists use the law to their advantage, they are a “vehicle” when they are on the street and a “pedestrian” when they are hit. Even if it was their fault it now becomes your problem, and your fault. I respect their right to be on the street but when they lane split, pull in front of you, and then do 10 miles an hour makes no sense.

  13. Julie Olsen Julie Olsen says:

Isn’t it true that crossWALKS are for walking and tha cyclists are supposed to get off their bikes and WALK across the street when using a crossWALK?

  14. ANJ says:

“make me and my passengers…get over in to on coming traffic to avoid hitting them.”
If any slower moving vehicle-car or bike- is in front of you, you stay behind it until it is safe to pass. There is also a new law requiring cars to give cyclists 3′ clearance when passing, and I am sure many cyclists now are wearing helmet cameras to cover themselves in the case of an accident. Cyclists and Car drivers BOTH need to follow traffic laws for everyone’s safety. Unfortunately there are some of both that don’t which makes it unsafe for everyone. I see bikes that run red lights or ride the wrong way, which makes me mad because I do follow traffic laws when I’m on my bike (but I stay on the bike paths as much as I can!). Then again, I see a lot of awful driving in this valley too. I think it’s safer for cyclists to ride on less traveled roads like Sierra Highway and Vasquez Canyon than it is for them to be in the bike lane of busier roads within the city limits like Soledad, Copper Hill, Bouquet, etc.

Back to the article- Yes, if the cyclist was in the cross walk, he or she should have been walking their bike. Walking your bike makes you a pedestrian, and cars are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians in a cross-walk.

  15. JFK says:

AJN makes a point that all of you anti-cyclists above must note – that it is the LAW that you give all cyclists at least 3 FEET of clearance when you pass them. As a longtime cyclist and driver, I too may sometimes feel inconvenienced when I must pass a slow moving group of cyclists, but we wait just as we do if any slow moving vehicle might be in our way…
As for a cyclist being part of a grill ?? dude you have some anger issues…and that will be assault, and yes, many of us wear cameras now so if something does happen, you might find your self in big trouble.
Common Courtousy — have any of you critics heard that term before? Why can’t we Share the Road with cars, motorcycles, bikes, runners, pedestrians without developing some road-rage attitude?? Believe me — get behind the wheel with a better, more courteous attitude and you will have a better day, one with more smiles and laughs and less profanity and anger…

  16. Just share the road, chill out, you’ll get there 10 seconds later and safe a life, mine. Thank you.

  17. joe says:

What is the name of the gentleman hit by the car? I was one of the first to arrive at the scene. I saw the extent of his injuries and we should be praying for his recovery.

  18. James Ramos James Ramos says:

Road safety is a responsibility that all bicyclists and drivers must share together. Please allow at least 3ft of space when passing a cyclist. The SCV cycling community thanks you

  19. Allie says:

Creekside crosswalks are a danger to all pedestrians. They are blocked by trees and shrubs making it impossible for oncoming traffic to see that a person is crossing, until they step out directly into oncoming traffic. It’s a design flaw and subjects the city to liability for endangering the public
