Jacquelyn Marshall’s team-high 14 points was one of many components that factored in to The Master’s College women’s basketball team blowing out Arizona Christian 77-45 Saturday afternoon at Bross Court.
The other components: Zoe Scott and Megan Lindsley each scoring 11 points in the rout, the motivation to go 2-0 in GSAC play, and the incentive to give fifth-year head coach Dan Waldeck his 100th career victory.
And at the end of two halves, the 12th-ranked Lady Mustangs raised their season record to 14-3 (2-0 GSAC), celebrating coach Waldeck’s 100th career victory.
“I’m very thankful to the Lord for the opportunity to coach great ladies at a great institution,” assessed Waldeck. “Every victory is a collective effort and commitment of our institution, my team, and those who have invested in this program (like my mentor, Ken Sugarman). This is a fun milestone, but this team is excited to keep building in this season’s continued progress.”
From start to finish, Saturday’s victory was controlled by the 12th-ranked Lady Mustangs. Such was the case as TMC rocketed out to a 17-0 start and an eventual 36-22 halftime lead.
Lindsley led TMC in scoring with 9 points at the break, while Kelly Burns and Marshall each chipped in 6 points. Also in the first half, Marshall yanked down 4 rebounds, while Whitney Best manufactured 4 assists. The Lady Mustangs went 15-30 (50%) from the field, 4-12 (33%) behind the arc, and 2-2 (100%) from the charity stripe.
In the opening 5 minutes of the second half, TMC extended its lead to 24 points of a 12-1 run built on three layups by Marshall. From there, the Lady Mustangs continued to dominate the court and eventually produced their largest lead (37 points) with 3:20 left to play off a Nicole Nitake three-pointer. TMC went on to beating the firestorm 77-45.
As a team, TMC finished the night by going 31-64 (48%) from the field, 8-24 (33%) on three-pointers, and 7-9 (77%) behind the line.
“I’m excited with the way that we defended,” further assessed Waldeck. “That was a big focus of ours and I feel like we got after it in the second half. We got a lot of contributions with our depth.”
Now, the Lady Mustangs will look to go 3-0 in GSAC play Tuesday night in a 5:30 p.m. road game against Concordia University.
“Concordia’s a great team and they are as talented as they come,” remarked Waldeck on next Tuesday’s game. “They’ve got great size and shooting. They’re going to challenge us…but I’m excited to go on the road and give the glory to God.”
