1945 - Acton Hotel, est. 1890, burns down; arson is suspected [story]

[KHTS] – The Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the first annual Santa Colorita 5k run on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Also known as the “Happiest 5k on the Planet,” this will not be your typical marathon-style event. Non-toxic colored corn starch will be thrown at runners at each kilometer marker, then a finale’s worth of colors at the end of the run.

Runners will also get their own bag of colors to play with and throw at other willing participants.

The event was inspired by similar ones taking place around the world, said Terri Crain, president and CEO of The Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce.

“They’re fun, family fitness oriented festivals that celebrate health, wellness and springtime and we thought, what a great thing to do in Santa Clarita instead of the traditional health and wellness fair,” Crain said.

santacoloritaThe run will take place at Castaic Lake Recreational Area. Local bands Blue Sky and The Grizwalds will perform live and the games Human Hamster Ball, Laser Tag, Relay Races will be provided by Hey-MadDog.

The Castaic Lions Club will provide food, including a pancake breakfast, and Whole Foods, one of the events many sponsors, will have a large recovery tent with water, oranges, yogurt and more. You can also shop at the Valencia Whole Foods and receive a discount flyer.

Runners can sign up on the Colorita website. Proceeds will benefit The Chamber of Commerce, Santa Clarita’s proactive advocate for issues that impact the business community, and the WiSH Education Foundation, the official private-fundraising organization for the support of the William S. Hart Union High School District’s educational programs.

“The Hart District needs funds for youth athletics, so we thought, what a great partnership to get the school district involved and donate money back to the district’s athletic program” Crain said.

Crain said she is most excited to feel everyone’s energy at the Colorita Run.

“I’m really into fitness and healthy living,” she said. “Plus it’s new, it hasn’t been done in the Santa Clarita Valley before, and we’re (The Chamber of Commerce) proud to be the ones bringing it here.”

On the day of the run:

Warm up – 7:45 a.m.

Adult Timed Wave – 8:00 a.m.
