Sophomore Ryan Paramo (1-0) got the win.
Freshman first baseman Roberto Ramos smacked a two-run home run, giving the College of the Canyons baseball team a 3-2 win over East Los Angeles College in the team’s season opener Tuesday afternoon.
East L.A. (0-1) took a 2-1 lead into the ninth, but saw COC’s first batter, David Oppenheim garner a walk. Ramos then hammered two-run homer that scored the game winner.
The Huskies tried to comeback, but COC center fielder Nick Vigo and catcher Freddie Flores combined for a quick swipe to cut down an East L.A’s runner at home plate, and end the game.
The game got off to a quiet start as the two teams combined to post only two hits through two innings. The scoring finally began in the top of the third when Canyons’ JD Krauskopf turned in COC’s first home run of the young season. Krauskopf, who led the team offensively and went 2-of-4, blasted the homer with one out in the third.
The Huskies answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring a pair of runs. East Los Angeles then loaded the bases with two outs, but could only plate two runs after a two RBI single from catcher David Sanchez put the Huskies on top, 2-1.
Sophomore southpaw Ryan Paramo (1-0) was tabbed with the victory, throwing three scoreless innings of relief without surrendering a hit. Paramo also struck out three batters and allowed just one walk. Sophomore starter Ryan Cruz allowed two hits, two runs and five walks, while striking out seven, in his first start of the season.
Canyons will return to action at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 as they travel to Cerritos College for a non-conference game.
