The last time The Master’s College men’s basketball team earned a conference victory was January 18th when they upset the then seventh-ranked Arizona Christian 77-76 in double overtime.
Since then, the Mustangs haven’t had much success in conference play…until tonight.
On Saturday, the Mustangs snapped their three-game losing streak with a 77-67 victory over GSAC opponent San Diego Christian.
With the win, TMC raised its 2013-14 record to 14-7 and 2-4 in conference play.
“The kids did a good job tonight executing and sticking with the things we have been working on,” commented men’s basketball head coach Chuck Martin. “To hold SDCC to 35% in the second half and only turn the ball over 7 times for the game are great things to do to have a chance to win on the road.”
The Hawks drew first blood in the first half off a Michael Lambert layup and free throw combo, but TMC answered back with a Derrick Fain (Dallas, TX) three-pointer. Fain would go onto finish the first half by leading TMC in scoring with 9 points, all by the means of going 3-3 behind the arc.
Down 27-16 with 9:28 left to play in the first, TMC highlighted the stanza by going on a 16-5 run and tying things at 32-32 with 2:59 left to play. TMC’s Dominique Lanier (Lakewood, CA) and Chris Patureau (Houston, TX) matched SDCC’s efforts by tying the game in the final three minutes at 39-39.
As previously mentioned, Fain led TMC in scoring with nine points while Bernard Ireland (Rialto, CA) followed by scoring 8 more. At the break, the Mustangs went 14-29 (48%) from the field, 6-8 (75%) behind the arc, and 5-5 (100%) behind the charity stripe.
In the opening 13 minutes of the second half, the Hawks managed to hold onto a lead until Korey Anderson (Clovis, CA) drove in a layup, bringing the score to 60-59. From there, TMC reeled off a 17-10 run to close the game at 77-67.
At the end of the night, Fain led all scorers with 20 points, Ireland posted 13, and Zach Stalin (Bellingham, WA) claimed 11. Stalin also led TMC in rebounds by yanking down 7 boards. As a team, TMC went 29-61 (47%) from the field, 8-16 (50%) behind the arc, and 11-13 (84%) from the free throw line. Staying true to being a team victory, the Mustangs’ bench chipped in 17 points.
Now, the Mustangs look to earn their third GSAC victory by taking down Vanguard, the NAIA’s 12th-ranked team, on Tuesday.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bross Court in The MacArthur Center.
GSAC Men’s Basketball News:
