[RLS Ventures] – Branches of the Santa Clarita Public Library, including Valencia, Canyon Country and Newhall, have added “My Life at the Bottom of the Food Chain” to their collections.
Local author Rich Samuels’ book is a darkly funny novel middle grade novel about Alexander, a 13-year-old so frightened of the possibility of bullying that he nearly becomes a bully himself.
Kirkus, a trusted source of book reviews for over eighty years, has called the novel “a valuable addition to topical literature about bullying,” adding that the book “will ring true for many middle schoolers,” and praised the author’s “exemplary job of detailing the ways the powerful prey on the week.” The review is available in its entirety [here].
Since it’s release in mid-2013, “My Life at the Bottom of the Food Chain” has been building grass roots support among teens, parents and teachers for its engaging portrayal of quirky, creative and somewhat obsessive Alexander, and his loyal friends who find their patience tested as his paranoia grows.
Author Rich Samuels, a Valencia resident since 2007, is a producer of non-fiction television and web content, and is a winner of several Los Angeles Emmy awards, including one for Children/Youth Programming. He’s taught filmmaking workshops, been a news director and reporter, and produced numerous documentaries. While he insists that My Life at the Bottom of the Food Chain isn’t autobiographical, Samuels admits a kinship with his main character.
My Life at the Bottom of the Food Chain, the first in a series, is also available from most online retailers in paperback for $7.50, and in all popular ebook formats for $2.99.
