Alumni soccer tradition continues

On the first Saturday of the new year, the coaches of the boys and girls soccer teams hosted an alumni game.  This year the event was held at Central Park and was followed by a BBQ at noon.

More than 100 alumni, parents and current players assembled for the 14th annual event reconnecting with past team members and friends from as far back as the first boys team in the 2000-01 and the first girls season in 2001-02 girls season.

Cardinal Carson Schwesinger was too much to handle on Friday. He scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the SCCS fifth-grade boys basketball team to a 45-22 win over Pinecrest.

With the win, SCCS improved to 3-0 on the season.

Tommy Gwinn scored seven points and collected 10 steals to key the Cardinal defense. Jase Jones led the team with 12 assists and finished the game with eight points.

 

Injury, sickness catch up to Cardinal girls varsity hoops in loss to Lancaster

Jenni Jones scored six points and Payton Schwesinger added five as the SCCS girls high school varsity basketball team battled to a 27-21 loss to Lancaster Baptist on Thursday.

Aubrey Robinson and Dakota Heitman scored four points each for SCCS (1-3, 0-2). Robinson led the Cardinals in rebounds.

The Cardinals, who are not short on effort or assertiveness, were outscored by the Eagles in the final minute and a half. SCCS played most of the game with five players with little help from the bench due to injury and flu symptoms.

The Cardinals had no legs to finish the Eagles in a back-and-forth contest.

The next league game will be on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Faith Baptist.

 

Cardinals sixth-graders fall in final seconds

The Cardinals sixth-grade boys basketball team let a big early lead slip away and lost to Delphi Academy, 37-36 on Thursday. Delphi scored the winning basket in the game’s final 20 seconds.

Darren Eskandar led SCCS (2-2) with 16 points and Peter Nameh added 12.

Noah Wiles, TJ Evans and Wyatt Kennedy scored two points apiece. Lucas Petee finished with three points. Rameh Wahba played strong defense in the middle.

 

Uribe scores 14, but Cardinals fall to Knights

The SCCS boys junior high basketball team (Division A) got 14 points from Michael Uribe on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough as the Trinity Knights topped the Cardinals, 52-37 at Velocity Gym.

Ethan Schwesinger and John Nameh scored nine points each for SCCS (2-1). The team played solid defense all around. Cardinal Phineas Yi held one of Trinity’s top scoring players to only six points for the game.

The Cardinals may see Trinity in the first round of the playoffs.

Mena, Cardinals roll past Einstein

Josh Mena tallied a team-high 12 points as the SCCS junior high boys basketball team (Team Frields) beat Albert Einstein Academy (AEA), 26-13 on Jan. 27.

The Cardinals (2-2, 1-0) got help from  Zach Caldwell, who hit a key 3-point shot in the first half. Ethan Frields, John Horning and Seth Yu closed out the scoring.

Defensively, Horning and Caleb Wheeler held AEA’s big center to only two points and controlling the rebounds. Josh Boelter and Aydin Holmes played well on defense as well.

 

Schwesinger’s double-double leads Cardinal hoops

Carson Schwesinger led the SCCS boys fifth grade basketball team with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Cardinals improved to 2-0 with a 37-12 win over Trinity Classical Academy.

Titus Tucker finished the game with nine points and 10 rebounds, and Tommy Gwinn added seven points and six assists. Jase Jones dished out a team-high seven assists, scored six points and notched 10 steals.
