Tommy Aquino 1Superbike racer Tommy Aquino, a graduate of Saugus High School, died Sunday in a crash at the Piru MX Park, authorities said.

He was 21.

According to his Facebook page, Aquino raced dirt bikes as a small boy then switched to street bikes at age 10. At age 16 he was named AMA Rookie of the Year and then signed as a factory rider with Yamaha for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.In 2012 he competed at Daytona and Laguna Seca, as well as a full season in the Spanish National championship. Last season he raced in the British Superstock Series on Team WD40.

According to authorities, shortly before 12:30 p.m. Sunday a caller reported a head-on collision between two motorcyclists at the track in the 4300 block of Center Street.

One rider was taken to a hospital by helicopter. Aquino was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports.

Aquino’s death has been confirmed by his family.

Aquino’s website simply shows a black ribbon with the No. 31.

He is survived by his father Tom, mother Carrie and younger brother Michael.

    I met him once with my kids in the pit area at a AMA race in Fontana. He wasn’t racing just there with his girl but took the time to sign an autograph and was super friendly to me and my kids.. Very sad to hear this

  18. My husband and I were driving home from Ventura driving by the Lake Piru race track and saw the helicopter flying in. We knew it wasn’t good and we prayed for whoever was hurt. I’m so sad to read this. We’ll continue to keep his family in our prayers.
