The California State Student Association has released a white paper on online education and digital learning. The document contains the perspectives of the CSSA Board of Directors, comprised of elected student leaders from the CSU’s 23 campuses, representing 437,000 students.
According to Anthony Gibson, CSSA’s Chief of Staff and student at CSU Sacramento, “This white paper is much more than a collection of opinions; it is a discussion about the future. The point of this paper is not to talk about what online education has been, but rather what it can be. As the official representative body of the over 437,000 California State University students, the California State Student Association has worked with student leaders from across the CSU to compile a set of opinions relating to what online education should become.”
The white paper has been in development since the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. CSSA representatives consulted with other students from across the 23-campus system, representatives from the CSU Chancellors Office, and faculty representatives from the Academic Senate CSU to ensure that the content of the paper was both representative of the student opinion, as well as understanding of constraints and challenges from other stakeholder perspectives.
The white paper is comprehensive in its reflection of student perspectives. Topics ranging from quality of MOOCs to the implementation of online education are included. It also covers several topics that don’t enjoy significant discussion in the current online education debates, including platforms or applying design thinking to curriculum intended for online distribution.
