In its first event of 2014, The Master’s College golf team returned to play by placing third overall with a combined team score of 895 (305-299-291) at the CSU San Marcos Spring Invitational.
Of the 12 competing schools, the Mustangs finished 10 strokes behind sixth-ranked CSU San Marcos (885), and 21 strokes behind tournament winner and No. 8 Texas Wesleyan (874).
“We started off rusty, but I’m very proud of the ways our guys finished on a challenging course,” commented head coach Jason Semelsberger. “We played very solidly in the final round. This result from the final round bodes well for our spring schedule.”
Leading the Mustangs’ efforts was senior Thane Ringler (Hutchinson, KS), placing second overall by shooting an even par 216 (69-74-73).
“Thane came very close to winning this tournament,” commented Semelsberger. “While it’s frustrating to not see him win, he’s continuing to grow and learn from these lessons. It’s only a matter of time before he’ll win multiple tournament.”
Giving a nod to the greener side of the Mustangs’ roster was freshman standout Joey Downey (Santa Clarita, CA) tying for ninth with an overall score of 223 (78-74-71).
Joining Ringler and Downey amongst the top 20 finalists was Nolan Sand (Hoquim, WA), who tied for 14th with an overall score of 227 (76-77-74), and Joshua Gardella (Littleton, CO), tying for 17th overall at 229 (82-74-73).
“Across the board, this tournament was a great effort by our team and I’m encouraged going into our next competition,” further assessed Semelsberger.
In just eleven days, Semelsberger and his Mustangs will travel to Victoria, Texas, to compete at the UHV Claude Jacobs Intercollegiate on the greens of the Victoria Country Club.
