The College of the Canyons football team had two players – defensive lineman Loni Fonua and free safety Wyatt Hixon – sign National Letters of Intent with Florida A&M University and the University of Sioux Falls.
“These are two outstanding young men who have been an absolute pleasure to coach,” said head football coach Ted Iacenda. “More impressive than their on-field accomplishments is their outstanding dedication to getting their work done in the classroom. I am extremely proud to see them leave College of the Canyons and continue their education and playing careers at the four-year level.”
Fonua, a Desert Oasis High School graduate, was a defensive lineman that turned in 22 tackles in 2013 and 18 in 2012. He was also a member of the No. 1 defense in the state in 2013 and an integral member of the sophomore-heavy line.
Fonua will join Division I Football Championship Subdivision member Florida A&M University under the supervision of Earl Holmes. Last season the Rattlers finished 3-9 and 2-6 in conference play.
Hixon will join Division II University of Sioux Falls after playing for the Cougars in 2011 and 2013. As a freshman, the Montclair College Preparatory School alum, tallied seven tackles and 13 in 2013, along with a pass break up.
The Cougars finished the 2013 season with a 6-5 overall record and are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Sioux Falls is led by four-year head coach Jed Stugart.
Head coach Ted Iacenda expects many more members of his 2013 squad to transfer in the spring and summer months.
