The College of the Canyons women’s basketball was downed by No. 1 Ventura College, 86-66, on Wednesday night at the VC Athletic Event Center. With the loss, Canyons dropped to 13-13 overall and 7-4 in conference and remains in a tie for second place with Moorpark College with one game left in the conference schedule. The Cougars are slated to host Allan Hancock College, while Moorpark will host Ventura College, this Saturday.
Sophomore guard Shawn Kolani led the Cougars with 21 points. Sophomore forward Keiona Mathews was held to 19 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Ashley Oliver added 12 points, nine rebounds and a steal.
The Ventura defense held the Cougars to 40.3 percent (25-62) shooting, which in most games isn’t horrible, but the Pirate shot 47.7 percent (31-65). The Cougars were out rebounded 44-30 and only had two points from the bench.
The Cougars will play in their final regular season home game on Saturday, Feb. 22, as they host Allan Hancock at 3 p.m. Before tip, please join us in a celebration of the sophomores in their final game in a Cougar uniform.
