[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies used teamwork for a court victory Friday, only this time there were backboards and middle schoolers involved.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s deputy team notched a nail-biting 41-37 overtime win at Castaic Middle School against the school’s eighth-graders in a basketball game Friday.

The Sheriff’s Department scrimmage is a fairly new tradition at Castaic Middle School and Deputy Dave Chellis, Saugus High School’s school resource deputy, mentioned the tough competition they faced and the Sheriff’s Department’s wider goal for being there.
“There is a lot of talent at this school,” Chellis said. “We are here to support the kids and let them know we’re interested in the community and that we are here for them.”
In order to prepare for the big day, the school held a competition prior to today’s game in order to find the best team to take on the Sheriff’s Department.
“The school has compiled an all-star team this year after a round-robin tournament to decide who would play us,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The game was held in the schools gym due to the rainy conditions and the competitors’ classmates looked on and cheered from the bleachers.
With two games planned originally, the rain forced the competition inside and onto one court.
The game ended after a one-minute overtime.
It wasn’t really about the final score, however, and there were many congratulations and high fives given by both teams.
“It’s the third year,” said Deputy Brian Rooney, a leader of the Sheriff’s Station’s Youth Activity League, which offers programs and activities for younger members of the community.
“It’s more fun than competitive, although (Castaic Middle School) has some good ballplayers up here.”
